Rutland was chartered in the 18th century by Governor Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire. In 1824 Rutland chartered its first bank, The Bank of Rutland. The mid to late 1800's saw Rutland grow as a marble and railroad center. Lines ran north and south , west and southeast.The marble industry eventually became the world's largest marble business.
